Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, shortly known as IRCTC which operates the online ticketing operations of the Indian railways today released its first and official mobile app for smartphones running on Windows 7.5 or higher (i.e., Windows 7.5 & 8). The app was developed by IRCTC in association with Microsoft. This is definitely a major step by Indian railways towards mobilizing its ticket booking services in the era of smartphones. The release on windows phones can be a test run by IRCTC to know how the users receive the app and infact mainly to know the usage of the app on smartphones.
Windows 8 Smartphone users can install the app which is 2MB in size from the windows phoneapp store. The UI of the app looks clean and elegant than other unofficial apps available in the app store. Most of the un official apps will allow the users to only know the PNR status of the ticket booked in app, for everything else the users will be navigated to the website. The users will not be able to use IRCTC’s official smartphone app for booking tickets for four hours in a day between 8AM and 12PM. IRCTC hopes that the number of e-ticket bookings will increase with the introduction of this app.
The users can do almost everything that can be done on IRCTC website as mentioned in the description of the app in the app store.
App provides booking facility of Railway tickets online and offers other services like checking reservation status, train schedules, train routes, availability of tickets, cancellation, booking history, recent history, favourites, add passengers as contacts and roaming the transactions between multiple devices.
Users will have to generate T Pin on IRCTC’s website irctc.co.in for the registered phone number inorder to use the app, the bookings can only be made through the registered phone number.
IRCTC where an average of 4 lakh ticket bookings happen everyday recently launched a railway ticket booking system via sms in June and also launched its online shopping website powered by Yebhi two weeks ago.
Hopefully IRCTC will also come up with its official version for major smartphone platforms such as Android and iOS soon so that it helps the users to use the app on their android & iOS run smartphones & tablets.
